TROPICAL AMSTERDAM
production blue moon film director: Alexa Oona Schulz creative documentary/ human interest "Tropical Amsterdam" is a story about a community left behind by colonialism in Sri Lanka. It's a community stuck between staying or leaving, illusion and reality, dancing tango under slow-circling fans, dining on Dutch china with blue windmills next to coconut palms, crazy for spices and tea. A world populated by abandoned brides, patriarchal fathers, angry sons, and deadly female spirits. Selected for the 2007 Discovery Campus Masterschool an EU MEDIA-supported initiative that develops international coproductions. |

| QUE LEJOS / HOW FAR
director: Thea Boyanowsky How has one song come to move so many people across the globe? "Cancion Mixteca" is an anthem for Spanish-speaking immigrants and ex-patriats everywhere living far from home. They sing it when they're lonely, they sing it at parties; many don't even know the title but once the melody begins, their eyes light up and their mouths start forming the words. A Oaxacan tree-trimmer, actor Gael Garcia Bernal, a kitchen full of Salvadoreans, artist Gabriel Orozco - to all it's a favorite. Through hearing a range of personalities sing the song and tell their stories, the film explores how the beautiful melody and spare poetry has become embedded profoundly in the hearts of a diaspora. And it reveals a deeper issue about sense of place as we discover why this song, written by a homesick student over 80 years ago, captures the imaginations of people with such varied backgrounds, from every walk of life who all love the song that starts with "how far" ("que lejos"). |
